For the past few months we’ve been on a social campaign for bullying! It’s a continuously growing issue! According to the “Indicators Of School Crime And Safety: 2013”
“About 28% of students, ages 12-18 reported being bullied at school during the school year.”
Sad, but true! Which has led to yet another suicide!
Most recently, the tragic death of 10 year Ashawnty Davis. Ashawnty was a fifth grader at Sunrise Elementary School in Aurora, Colorado. It was there that she was bullied, confronted her bully, got into a physical altercation, the altercation was recorded, and then placed on a social app. called “Musical.ly”
According to Ashawnty’s mother [Latoshia Harris],
“I saw my daughter was scared. She was devastated when she found out that it had made it to Musical.ly.”
Her mother went on to say that the video footage only made the bullying WORSE, and it all became too much for Ashawnty to handle. Which led to the ultimate tragic event…..
Just two weeks after the entire ordeal, Ashawnty hung herself inside of her home closet!
Doctors thought that they could save her, but she spent an additional two weeks in the hospital on life support before she ultimately passed away.
The school district released the following statement:
“We do not tolerate bullying of any kind in our schools and we have a comprehensive bullying prevention program in place at all of our schools. We were made aware of that video when a media outlet approached us with it. We took immediate action in response, turning the video over to the police and addressing the matter with students.”
At the end of the day, the way your child acts starts at home! We’re aware that you can’t control them when they’re not in your presence, but you can instill certain tools into them that won’t lead them astray.
We must DO BETTER!
